George Service, the youngest child of John & Margaret (née McKown) Service, was born on February 28, 1853 in what is now Cherokee, South Carolina. In the 1850's, the area was known as Gowdeysville, and was part of a much larger Union County until 1897. At that time Union County was divided into a number of smaller counties, and the community became part of Cherokee County.
In the winter of 1867, young George Service came down with pneumonia and died the morning of January 15th. He is buried in the family cemetery near London Creek.
