"Nan", a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, caregiver, and friend, passed away surrounded by her family on February 27, 2011. She resided at 264 South University Street (1335 East) in the Foothill neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah at the time of her death.

She was born April 17, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah, one of five children and the only daughter of Nora and Acel Richardson. She attended the University of Utah, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.

In 1946, she married the love of her life, Elliot Smith Walker, in the Salt Lake Temple and had five children, whom she cherished.

Soon after the marriage, her husband was afflicted with polio and Mary Lou became the main breadwinner for the family, earning her undergraduate degree in English and her Masters Degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Utah, followed by her Doctorate Degree in Education Administration from Brigham Young University.

She broke ground as one of the first female administrators in Salt Lake City's Granite School District, where she later retired as a principal after thirty-eight years of service.

She was an active and exemplary member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints throughout her life, and served in many callings and positions in her ward and stake. Her profound dedication to her faith and strong love of life and family kept her going when her husband passed away in 1985.

Mary Lou counted among the highlights of her life the LDS Mission she served in Mauritius and England. She also took great pride in her volunteer work at the Salt Lake LDS Temple, the Joseph Smith Building, the Utah State Capitol, and with the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers organization.

She is survived by her five children - Richard (KC), Russell (Denise), Virginia (Patrick Froehling), Clark (Laura), and Mary Jane (Douglas Quayle), as well as sixteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.

Mary Lou's family expresses heartfelt appreciation for the love, dedication and caring service Hannah Davidson and many friends have provided over the past months as Mary Lou experienced declining health. Her family and friends will remember her exceptional faith in God, love, strength, intelligence, perseverance, humor, compassion, kindness, and dignity.

Funeral Services will be held in the University Ward Chapel, 160 South University Street, on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. Friends and loved ones may visit Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple Street, on Friday, March 4, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at the Church between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. prior to the funeral services.
Interment will take place in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
