British Prime Minister. Born the 3rd Marquis of Salisbury, he graduated from Oxford University, in 1850 and entered the House of Commons as MP for Stamford, in 1853. His first political post was as Secretary of State for India, (1866-67, 74-76). He was Britain's Foreign Secretary, in 1878 and he helped to secure peace in the Balkans at the Congress of Berlin. In 1885, he became Prime Minister of Great Britain, serving 1886-92, 1895-1902). Due to failing health, he resigned and his nephew Arthur Balfour, replaced him as Prime Minister. He died shortly after at age 73.
