Adolf Sutro was born in Alix-la-Chapelle, Prussia and died in San Francisco, California; German-born mining engineer, emigrated during the Gold Rush era and settled in San Francisco, famous for the Mount Davidson tunnel project to the Comstock Lode (known as the Sutro Tunnel) and completed in 1878, Populist mayor of San Francisco (1894-1896), builder of the most elaborate of several Cliff Houses "The Castle" (1897), and the famous Sutro Baths.
