LCpl Liam Richard Tasker

Lance Corporal
1st Military Working Dog Regiment
Royal Army Veterinary Corps
British Army

He deployed in September 2010 with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan as an Arms and Explosives Search dog handler.

LCpl Tasker was killed by enemy small arms fire while on patrol with his dog Theo in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. Sadly on return to Camp Bastion, Theo, a 22-month-old springer spaniel cross, suffered a seizure and died.

Aged 26, LCpl Tasker was from Kircaldy, Scotland. He joined the Army in 2001 and was originally a vehicle mechanic in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. His passion was always dogs which led to his transfer to the Royal Army Veterinary Corps in 2007. Described as an expert "Dog Man" he was a trainer with a natural empathy with dogs and considered a rising star in the corps. An outgoing, jovial and friendly character, he was extremely popular within his squadron. He also enjoyed playing rugby and was only four weeks away from finishing his deployment. A commanding officer remarked that LCpl Tasker and his dog Theo were made for each other. They found more explosive devices and arms than any individual team had in Afghanistan to date and saved many lives as a result.

LCpl Tasker leaves behind his father Ian Tasker, mother Jane Duffy and stepfather Jimmy Duffy, brother Ian, sisters Laura and Nicola, grandmother Janette McCord, and girlfriend Leah Walters, along with other relatives and friends. His family said: "He died a hero doing a job he was immensely passionate about. We are so proud of him and everything he's achieved. Words can't describe how sorely he will be missed."

Funeral with full military honours was held on March 22, 2011 at Tayport Parish Church, Fife.

In September 2011, LCpl Tasker was posthumously awarded a Mention in Despatches in recognition of gallant service.
