David Robert Toombs
May 29, 1928 - March 1, 2011

David Robert Toombs, 82 passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2011 in Cox South Hospital after a brief illness. He was a lifelong resident of Springfield, born May 29, 1928 the son of Robert L. and Jewel Cummings Toombs. He attended Greenwood School and graduated from Sewanee Military Academy in 1946. He was a 1950 graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia with a Business degree and was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.

In 1951 he was united in marriage to Jeanne Nesbitt of Overland Park, Kansas. Of that union two children were born, Robert N. Toombs and Sara Toombs Krutsinger.

Dave carried on his family business, Toombs and Company, as President for over 50 years. Dave served many years on the Board and as past President of the National Window and Door Association.

Dave was a lifetime and active member of Christ Episcopal Church, where he served as a Vestryman, Stewardship Chairman and Chairman of the Church Foundation. He was a member of all Masonic bodies, Scottish Rite, Abou Ben Adhem Shrine, where he served as Past Potentate and Past Director of the Royal Order of Jesters. Dave was also a past President of Hickory Hills Country Club and was an avid golfer. Because he cared deeply, Dave leaves a long legacy of community service to Springfield and the Ozarks. He served in various community organizations including: Ozarks Food Harvest, serving as Chairman of the Fundraising Campaign for their first building; Council of Churches; Mercantile Bank Board; Springfield Park Board; Area Boy Scouts, Community Foundation of the Ozarks and Drury University Breech School of Business Advisory Council. Dave was a long time supporter of the University of Missouri and was a member of The Jefferson Club and the Davenport Society.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Bryan Toombs and his wife Marianne and their children Bryan C. Toombs and Lynne Toombs Datema.
He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years Jeanne, of the home; his son, Robert N. Toombs and his wife Valerie; his daughter Sara Toombs Krutsinger and her husband Dave; his sister Barbara Toombs Wright and a step-grandson Brad Krutsinger; his nieces Anne Kidd, Jenny Baldwin, Susie Salitz and her husband Bobby and nephew Lloyd Wright and wife Martha and their families.
Dave will be remembered for his integrity, humility generosity and devoted love to his family, friends, community and his Church.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Christ Episcopal Church Foundation, 601 E. Walnut St., Springfield, MO 65806; Shriner's Hospital, 601 E. St. Louis St., Springfield, MO, 65806 or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 4, 2011 in Christ Episcopal Church with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Burial will follow in Maple Park Cemetery. No formal visitation is planned but friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Thursday.
