Bertha was the daughter of Morris Alanson Beal of North Cutler, Washington County, Maine and Maud I. Ellingwood Beal of Grand Manan, Charlotte Providence, New Brunswick, Canada. Morris was married twice. Morris married Minerva Eunice Look on 15 April 1884 in Columbia Falls, Washington County, Maine. Minerva and Morris had one child. Harold E. Beal was born on 28 June 1885 in Jonesport, Washington County, Maine. Harold died on 06 October 1911 in Bangor, Penobscot County, Maine of typhoid fever. Harold was twenty-six years, three months, and eight days old when he died. Morris married Maud on 13 February 1906 in Jonesport, Washington County, Maine. Maud and Morris had nine children. They were: Cecil R. Beal was born on 11 November 1906; Garfield L. Beal was born on 11 March 1908; Bertram W. Beal was born about 1910; Abner K. Beal was born on 02 April 1911; Harold E. Beal was born on 12 November 1912; Bertha Frances Beal was born on 13 December 1914; Stillborn Daughter Beal was born on 17 December 1917; Infant Son Beal was born on 14 July 1919; and Lena M. Beal was born about 1920. All the children were born in Jonesport, Washington County, Maine.

Bertha married Owen F. Staples on 14 December 1935.

Note: Portland - Bertha B. Staples, 96, formerly of Westbrook and Windham, died at a Portland hospital. Born in Jonesboro, she was the daughter of Morris A. and Maud I. (Ellingwood) Beal. Raised and educated in Windham, she was a 1933 graduate of Windham High School. In 1935, Bertha married Owen F. Staples and was home-maker while raising her family. In 1956, she began her working career at Guy Gannett Publishing Company of Portland. She retired from there in 1987 after 31 years of service. Even after her retirement, she continued working part-time until 1990. Bertha enjoyed reading, traveling, and sightseeing, animals, outings to restaurants; doing word jumbles in the newspaper, and her many trips to Jonesboro. Her husband, Owen F. Staples predeceased her on Oct. 3, 2001; three brothers, Harold E. Beal, Cecil R. Beal, and Garfield L. Beal have, also, predeceased her. Survivors include one son, Robert O. Staples, and daughter-in-law, Carol Staples, of Westbrook; one brother, Bertram W. Beal, of Windham, and one sister, Lena B. Irwin, of Westbrook. Rev. Dale Malone officiated.
