Nola Opal Tennison was the first daughter and third of six children born to Joseph Hardin and Lenora Owensby Tennison. She was born in Dallas County, Missouri, and named for Lenora's youngest sister, Nola Owensby. Although the middle initial on her tombstone is C., the family records list her middle name as Opal.

In November of 1909 several of Nola's siblings became ill with cold type symptoms. It soon became apparent that the children had diphtheria. It wasn't long before Nola also became ill and died from diphtheria. Her brother, Clarence, died six weeks later. They were buried next to each other and share a stone.

Information for this biography was taken from the book "A Journey Through Time with the Owensby Family of North Carolina, Tennessee and the Midwest" by Emma Sue Owensby Davenport.
