Joseph Hardin Tennison was the son of Joseph Collins and Rachel Tennesse Coffman Tennison. When Joseph was 6 months old his father died leaving his mother a widow (at age 28) with six children.

In 1899 Joseph married Lenora Owensby, daughter of Lorenzo Dow and Lyddia Butcher Owensby. They were married by James A. Taylor, Justice of the Peace. Following the wedding the family had a dance for the friends of Joe and Lenora in the Owensby family barn.

Joseph and Lenora had six children.

Joseph enjoyed a good fight. He was quick with his fists. During one such event his brain was injured and this eventually led to his death.

Information for this biography was taken from the book "A Journey Through Time with the Owensby Family of North Carolina, Tennessee and the Midwest" by Emma Sue Owensby Davenport.
