His mother died when she was in labor with him, he was raised by his aunt Ella Lawson and her husband, William Bishop. When he was 15 according to the 1900 census, he was living in John E and Callie Worrell's boarding house in Piper Gap District, Carroll County, Virginia. He went west and worked in a Wild West Show and also worked for Baldwin-Felts Detectives in 1912 during the search for the Allen family. He wrote articles for a western magazine and kept a journal during his work with the detectives, most of which was used in a book by William Chancellor Payne. He died of pneumonia.
