PHOENIX, Ariz. — Effie Elizabeth Fields, 93, formerly of Maryville, Mo., passed away on Thursday, February 24, 2011 in Phoenix at the home of her daughter, where she had resided the past seven years.

Effie Elizabeth Underwood was born on June 24, 1917 in Coffey, Mo., the daughter of William S. "Bill" and Almeda (Ballard) Underwood.

She was a graduate of the Coffey Missouri High School and attended Northwest Missouri State Teacher's College in Maryville. Effie married Paul Eugene Fields on March 21, 1941 in Gallatin, Mo.

Mrs. Fields had been a former manager of the Tober's Dress Shop in Maryville and a member of the Maryville First Christian Church.

Her husband, Paul Eugene Fields had been the Post Master at the Maryville Post Office. He preceded Effie in death on January 1, 1985, as did their son, Paul Douglas Fields on October 15, 1979, her parents, and a brother, Douglas Underwood.

Effie is survived by her best friend and daughter, Betty Jo Fields-Howard and son-in-law, Gary Howard of Phoenix; nieces and nephews: Carole (Jeff) Funston, Maryville; Linda (Bob) Dean, Sioux City, Iowa; Anne (Larry) Amthor, Tarkio, Mo.; and Kack (Gloria) Miller, Blue Springs, Mo.; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, at Price Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with burial in Miriam Cemetery, Maryville, Mo.

Memorials may be made to the Maryville First Christian Church, 201 West Third Street, Maryville, MO 64468.

Effie was dearly loved and will be fondly remembered by her family and friends in both Maryville and Phoenix.
