Lowell's fingers and knee were shot off when he tripped during duck hunting. He used his belt as a tourniquet around his leg and dragged himself to the railroad tracks. A handcar crew came along and took him to the hospital where he stayed for nine months. My grandmother visited him daily, having to take the trolly car to the hospital. He refused to have his leg amputated as the doctors recommended. Without his knee joint he walked stiff-legged. As you can see in the photo, he didn't stop hunting.
Prior to his accident he played baseball for the Tacoma Tigers.
