Betty Boyd Burkholder
Betty Boyd Burkholder, 83, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011. She was the wife of James "Jim" H. Burkholder. She was born in Lynchburg on March 15, 1927, a daughter of the late Edwin Thurman Boyd and the late Lucy Lillian Wills Boyd.
In addition to her husband, Betty is survived by her son, Ed Burkholder, of Lynchburg; her daughters, Lillian B. Rice, of Evington, and Martha B. Rice, of Lynchburg; her brother, E. T. Boyd, of Richmond; her sister, Lucy B. Smith and husband, Bill, of Virginia Beach; her grandchildren, Christina Scruggs, Aaron Edward Rice, Tiffany Kinnier Rice and Benjamin Davis Rice; and three great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her son, Boyd Burkholder, and two great-grandchildren.
Betty is also survived by special friends, Judy Payne and Mike Payne, Jack and Gail Schuler, Marybelle and Tom White, Margaret Weeks, Peggy Ferguson, Maggie Wells, Sylvia Marsh, Cynthia Bond, Richard Findlay, Mike Hudson, Judy and Carl Connell and Patty Bryant; all the members of Circle Four at Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church, where she was a member; and many other devoted friends and neighbors.
Betty was a lady of many talents and interests who never met a stranger. In 1936, at age nine, she was a member of the Queen's Court during the celebration of Lynchburg's Sesquicentennial. She was a true "social butterfly" and "southern belle." All who knew her will recall her customary greeting of, "Hi honey." She attended E. C. Glass High School, Blackstone Junior College and studied dance for nine years at Floyd Ward School of Dance, as well as other studies in ballet and ballroom dancing. She once auditioned for the Rockettes. Betty loved to socialize and entertain in her home. She was always known as "The Hostess with the Mostest" during the time that she and Jim lived in Lynchburg, Bedford and Connecticut. Her friends in Connecticut were always enchanted by her "southern charm." Betty also spent many enjoyable hours at the Peakland pool and Virginia Beach.
The most important part of Betty's life were her friends and family. She will always be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all who knew her.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, Feb. 28, 2011, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Chris Deneen officiating.
