His death record lists his mother as Phoebe Sutton but another source has her maiden name as Hunt. According to 1850 and 1860 U.S. Census records, he had six siblings: sisters Pennina, Rachel, Mary Elizabeth and Jane; and brothers Albert and Garrett. Abraham's death certificate says he was a carpenter.
Bowman, 20, enlisted in the Union Army in September 1864 during the Civil War and mustered out in June 1865.* His brother Albert Wheeler Hendershot, 23, had enlisted in 1861 and was killed on 03 Jun 1864 during the Battle of Cold Harbor in Virginia.
Bowman married Mary Rose LeClare. She was born on 22 Jan 1843 in Pennsylvania, a daughter of John LeClere and wife Sarah Tucker. The family name is also seen as Leclair and LeClair.
Bowman and Mary had six children: Mary Ethalyn Hendershot Johnson (1874-1944), Sarah Ida Hendershot Honsaker (1866-1945), John Howard Hendershot (1869-1929), Robert Franklin Hendershot (1886-?) and Charles Veach Hendershot (1884-1950). According to a family researcher, Charles had a twin, gender not specified, who died in infancy. The 1900 U.S. census said Mary had six children, five living.
Mary died on 25 Nov 1913 in Fayette County, Pa. Bowman died on 01 Mar 1927 at the home of his son Charles in Morgantown, Monongalia County, W.Va.
