He was born in Bergebruck, Posen Dist. of Prussia. After his father died when he was very young, he trained as a baker. He married Augusta Fricke in 1862. The families lived near the Polish border and learned to speak both Polish and German.

Two sisters, Elizabeth Hoffman Witt and her family and Henricke Hoffman Steinlicht Fricke and her family came later.

Frederich was drafted into Franco-Prussian War and served two years. Fleeing further service in the cruel Prussian army, he immigrated 1871 to Anchor, IL and became a baker for Sibley Estate. He purchased land in McLean County and wife Augusta came with the reat of their family about 1872 to farm it.

They had 16 children, twelve of whom survived to adulthood. See Augusta's bio for their names.
