Journalist. As a World War II correspondent he was nicknamed "Beachhead Don" because he covered so many Allied landings, including Omaha Beach on D-Day. He won Pulitzer Prizes for international reporting in 1951 and 1952. Whitehead also wrote five non-fiction books, including the bestselling "The F.B.I. Story" (1956). It was made into a Hollywood film in 1959.
