Mr. George Weathersbee, one of the pioneer residents of the Peniel section, and long recognized as one of the county's best citizens, died at his home at Peniel Monday morning, following a short illness.
The deceased was eighty-one years of age, and had resided for nearly sixty years in this county.
At the outbreak of the Civil War he volunteered in the Confederate army and saw active service for the four years of strife. After the surrender he returned to this section, making his home at Peniel, where he ever since made his residence.
He was a faithful member of the Baptist Church and of the Masonic Lodge. A man of greatest honesty and integrity and possessing deep convictions, he was honored and respected by the entire community. He was a loyal, generous friend, a good citizen and an indulgent parent. His was a life of extended usefulness, and one worthy of praise.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Larkin, of Peniel.
The funeral was held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock from the Peniel Baptist Church, Rev. J. F. Savell officiating. The interment was in the family section in the Peniel Cemetery. Mooney and Davis, the local funeral directors, had charge of the arrangements. (Times-Herald Obituary dtd Friday, 24 Jan 1919.)
While not quite unexpected the death of Mr. George Weathersbee one of Putnam county's oldest and beloved citizens, was received with surprise by his many true friends, who extend much sympathy and condolence to his sorrowing widow and daughter.
Mr. Weathersbee had been very feeble for some time, but had only been confined to his bed twelve days, when he peacefully passed away at seven o'clock Monday morning, Jan. 20, 1919 at his home in Peniel.
The deceased gentleman was born in Barnswell, S.C., April 6, 1836 [sic], and came to Florida at the age of twenty, and made his home in Peniel where he has lived for more than sixty years. He married at the age of twenty-two; his first wife lived only a few years; they had one daughter, Mrs. Georgianna Stephens, who also died at an early age. He married again on Jan. 2, 1875, and has been a devoted husband for forty-four years.
He was a consistent church member for more than fifty years, and his absence will be felt by his many friends and relatives.
He was of a cheerful disposition, and being an old Confederate veteran, he was known, respected and esteemed by practically everybody through the county.
He is survived by a wife and one daughter, Mrs. Theo E. Larkins, of Peniel, by seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Eugenia Roberts, of Peniel, Fla.
The funeral was held at the Peniel Baptist Church, Tuesday morning Jan 21st at 10 o'clock. Interment was in Peniel Cemetery. (Times-Herald Obituary dtd Friday, 24 Jan 1919.)
Mr. George Weathersbee, one of Peniel's oldest pioneer citizens, quietly passed away on Monday morning at his home after fourteen days of illness. If he had lived till April 6th, he would have been 83 years old. He leaves a wife, one daughter and several grandchildren to mourn his loss. Our sympathy is extended to the family.
