The above paragraph is from p. 315 of "Collin County, Texas Families"
by Minnie Pitts Champ -- copyright 1994.

Flora Smith married James Knox Polk Shrader and is buried next to him in Pecan Grove Cemetery, along with their children and James' sister, Tennessee C. Shrader Mathers and her family.

Dr. Smith settled in McKinney in 1853 coming here from Tennessee. He was educated in Louisville, Kentucky before coming to Collin County to practice medicine. Doctors were so scarce at that time that he had to work all over Collin County and surrounding counties, going by horseback with his supplies in saddlebags, always ready to stop at pioneer homes along the way. Soon he was joined by two other physicians, Dr. Fitzgerald and Dr. Westfall and the three of them founded Smith Drug, doing business on the east side of McKinney's square. Until a few years ago, it was the oldest continuing business in McKinney.

Dr. Smith served two terms as President of the Medical Examiners for the district. When the Civil War came he joined Col. J. B. Wilmeth's company and served on the Texas coast.

Dr. Smith was twice married, first to Amelia Tinsley and the to Mrs. Wheat of Clarksville.
