He was eldest of four children of William Homer Blanchard Wisely (1885 -1959) and Helena Henrietta Borchwardt (1886 - 1977)

Homer married Hazel Ann Steinberg on June 25, 1930 in Fairbury, IL in the home of her uncle. They had two daughters.

After graduating from University of Illinois, Homer or "Pete," as he was known, worked as a civil engineer in Champaign, IL. He was elected Executive Secretary of American Society of Civil Engineers and the family moved to Scarsdale, NY. Pete served for decades, traveling the world advising and researching engineering projects and problems and accepting awards on behalf of the society. His family sometimes traveled with him. He retired in 1972.

He became a Visiting Professor in Civil Engineering at U. of Florida in Gainesville where they lived. About 1980 they really retired to Virginia to enjoy their garden.

Homer was a master storyteller and could enthrall an audience, adult or child. He wrote many articles and several books including a history of his society. He also loved golf.
