Mary Ann was the daughter of George Mettert & Nancy Gathright, and the sister of Joseph Mettert and Martha Mettert Walsh. She married Elijah Baker on Apr. 11, 1838, and they had eight known children: Dabney Baker, Nancy Baker Wood, Charlotte Baker Friend, Georgetta Baker, Mattie Baker, Mary Baker, Pinninnah Baker & Rosa Baker McDowell.

From the Richmond Dispatch, Apr. 1, 1896:

The funeral of Mrs. Mary Ann Baker, who died at her home, No. 2239 Venable street, at 9:40 o'clock Monday morning, took place from Union-Station Methodist Episcopal church yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock, and the remains were laid to rest in Oakwood. Rev. Dr. Vanderslice conducted the service, and spoke highly of the Christian character of the deceased. Mr. R. S. M. Valentine sang a solo.

Mrs. Baker was the widow of Mr. Elijah Baker, the proprietor of Baker's Bitters, and both she and her husband were exceedingly well known on Church Hill. Deceased leaves two daughters - Mrs. John E. Friend and Mrs. John G. McDowell.
