She was born to Bertha (née MUELLER) and Heinrich "Henry" FRIEDRICH in Jamestown, Mercer County,* Pennsylvania.

Clara's parents were from the German state of Hesse (Hessen) in west-central Germany. They had married in 1889, and he came to America in 1893 and she followed in 1894. She brought two of their first three children with her, Bertha Hannah FRIEDRICH (1890-1914; later JOHNSTON) and John Henry FRIEDRICH (1893-1984). Their second child, Sophia Pauline FRIEDRICH (1891-1892) had died in Rollinghausen just short of being a year old.

Heinrich looked for a place to farm, first in either Columbiana County, Ohio or Washington County, Pennsylvania.* Then Alleghany County, Penn, and Mercer County, Penn. In c.1906 he decided to become a Sooner with the opening of the western half of Oklahoma, and homesteaded in Texas County, Okla, around the town of Hooker. Sometime after the family moved to Alberta, around Milk River, and then Saskatchewan, Canada.

Clara married Paul Robert KIHN in Lethbridge, Alberta on 17 October 1927.

Clara and Paul would spend time in nearby Shelby, Montana, and then Stevensville, Montana, before finally settling for good in Yakima, Washington.

*The exact place of birth is a guess based on several different choices. One record says Jamestown, Greene County, Ohio, which I find unlikely. While there is a Jamestown, Greene County, Ohio; and a Greene County, Pennsylvania; the family lived more in the area of Jamestown, Greene Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania.
