Enlisted in Brunswick County, NC at age 32,
May 5, 1862 for the war in 3rd Company G,
2nd Regiment North Carolina Artillery.
Appointed Captain to rank from date of
enlistment. Resigned January 8, 1863 to
appear before a Medical Board for
examination for an appointment
as Surgeon. Appointed Surgeon February
February 27, 1863 and later appointed
Assistant Surgeon, Field and Staff,
50th Regiment North Carolina Infantry.
It appears that for a short while he was
transferred to th 66th North Carolina
Infantry Regiment as Surgeon, transfer was
effective February 28, 1863. On April 10,
1863 Special Order 87/4 probably transferred
him back to the 50th Regiment and from
April 12, 1864 until October 8, 1864 the
unit was at Camp Burgwyn near Wilminton,
North Carolina.
There is a reference card in the National
Archive records showing him to be a
Prisoner of War - Paroled, dated June 1,
1864.
There is also a copy of a Letter written
at Plymouth, NC on July 15, 1864, adressed
to General Sam Cooper, giving his
resignation as Surgeon of the 50th Regiment
NC Infantry due to ill health. He provided
a letter from two other Surgeons verifying
his illnesses.
