Medical Pioneer. He is considered the "Father of Osteopathy". During the Civil War, he served as a Hospital Steward in the 9th Kansas Volunteer Infantry. By the early 1870's, he advocated the use of osteopathic manipulative treatment. He identified the musculoskeletal system as a key element of health and philosophy focuses on the unity of all body parts. In 1874, he became the world's first osteopathic physician and founded the American School of Osteopathy in 1892 in Kirksville, Missouri (known today as the A.T. Still University of Health Sciences).
