Gospel singer Marion Williams was one of the most versatile singers of her generation; her signature sound had a major influence in gospel and throughout her American music, including jazz, blues, rock and soul. At age three, Williams performed in her first a capella concert, and in 1947 she became a member of the famous Ward Singers. 1965 marked the start of her solo career, and for the next fifteen years Williams toured around the world, performing in concert halls, nightclubs and jazz festivals. In 1993, a year before her death she was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors Award. She was among the last surviving links to gospel's golden age.
