Born circa 1742. Moved to Tryon (now Rutherford) County, NC around 1775. Served as captain in the Revolutionary War, fighting in the Battle of King's Mountain. Clarence Griffin in his "History of Old Tryon and Rutherford Counties, NC 1730-1936", p. 117 says "George Ledbetter was a member of the convention (to ratify the Constitution of the U.S.) of 1788-89 was a man of unusual ability, well educated for his day and one of the county's leading men."
