Her father, Christian Hoffmann according to Hoffman family tradition, died when she was very young. Her mother's name and dates are unknown. In 1855 Elizabeth married Karl (Carl) Witt in Posen Province of Prussia. They had 8 children--two died as infants.

They followed children Gustav, Amelia and Ernstina to U.S.A. on S.S. Strassburg on 24 May 1884 with daughters Wilhelmina and Helena, settling with Elizabeth's sister, Elizabeth Hoffman Fricke, near Anchor, IL. One daughter, Henrietta (Yetta), did not emigrate.
