OBITUARY:
Vernon George Vance, 86, a San Bernardino native, died on June 4, 2002. Vernon was born February 1, 1916, the son of Katherine Preston Vance and John James Vance. He had one older brother, Jimmy. After graduation from San Bernardino High School in 1935, Vance worked as a journeyman machinist with the Santa Fe Railroad for 42 years. Vance played softball throughout Southern CA during the Depression and later for the Santa Fe Softball Team. In 1952 he won the batting championship for all of San Bernardino County. Vance coached Little League and Pony League Baseball. After retiring from the Santa Fe Railroad, Vernon Vance remained active in the Railroad Retirees' Association and the International Association of Machinists. He was a proud member of The Native Sons of the Golden West and Edgehill Club. Vernon Vance is survived by his wife, Helen French Vance; a son, Jim Vance of Tustin; daughter, Dorothy Vance Alexander of Wytheville, VA; four grandchildren: Rich Vance, John Vance, Brian Alexander, and Jason Alexander. Other survivors include his wife's children and grandchildren. Funeral and graveside services were conducted by Wayland French, Vernon's oldest stepson, at Montecito Mortuary Chapel and Cemetery.
