U.S. Marine Corps Chaplain Bob Boardman will officiate. A reception will follow at the Coquille Valley Elks Lodge, 54942 Maple Heights Road.

He was born Nov. 25, 1929, in Myrtle Point, to Wilfred and Gladys (Tripp) Laird. He died March 3, 2002, in Mount Vernon.

Shirley grew up in the Coquille Valley and graduated from Coquille High School in 1948. He attended Oregon Technical Institute for a short time and played on the football team. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1950, and served as a tank mechanic during the Korean conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1953 with the rank of staff sergeant.

Shirley returned to Oregon, settling in Curry County, where he worked for his father's logging company, Griffey and Laird Logging. He later went on to start his own road construction company in 1961, and later branched off into the logging business. He owned and operated several road construction and logging businesses, until his retirement in the early '80s. He purchased Pacific Coast Recreation after his retirement.

Shirley married Judy Karen Boice in 1958. They later divorced.

Shirley had been honored many times at logging conferences throughout Oregon. Until his death, he tinkered with heavy machinery. The military was his passion. He collected and restored military vehicles, including a tank, several jeeps and numerous other military equipment and Marine Corps memorabilia. He drove several of his vehicles in parades. He helped start and maintain many military memorabilia museums, both public and private. He was also a member of the Coquille Valley Elks Lodge, No. 1935.
