US Senator, US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served Idaho's 1st District in the US House of Representatives from 1967 until 1973, and was their US Senator (1973 to 1991). The son of an attorney, he was the grandson of A.L. Freehafer a prominent member of Idaho's State House of Representatives. Following service with the US Navy where he trained as a pilot during World War II, McClure attained his law degree from the University of Idaho College of Law in 1950; he was elected to and served in Idaho's State Senate from 1961 until 1966. During his tenure in the US Senate, he supported gun rights, gave Idaho a voice on regional energy policy under the Northwest Power Act (1980) and chaired the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee and the Appropriations Subcommittee for the Interior Department (1981 to 1984). He died of complications from a series of strokes.
