Galen Dowd/Doud was a direct descendant of Henry Doude, one of the followers of Rev. Henry Whitfield who settled in Guilford, Connecticut. Henry Doude was one of the signers of the Guilford Covenant in June 1639.

Galen was one of eight sons of Tamson Wilcox and Ebenezer Doud. (From "Descendants of Henry Doude"): He lived at the east end of Boston Street, Madison, and was a prominent and influential man in his community, serving the town for many years as justice of the peace and in the state legislature.

He married Mary Ward in 1812, daughter of Elizabeth Ames and Cruttenden Ward of New London, CT.
