Born c.1677, Mary Morris, the wife of Capt. John Morris of Newark, died at age 84. Her large, handsomely cut gravestone features a soul effigy with what appears to be a lily suspended over its head rather than the more common "flame of God's love" or "crown of religious victory". Floral symbols typically symbolize the brevity and fragility of life, but in the case of the elderly Mrs. Morris, may be a reference to her purity or spiritual beauty. Cut from brown sandstone, the marker appears to be the work of William Grant, a Boston carver who came to New York, then New Jersey, where he practiced his craft for the greater part of the 1700's.
