Ronald L. Mobley, 71, of Anchorage died peacefully Aug. 15, 2008, at Providence Extended Care. A celebration of life was held at the Lazy Dog Antique Mall, 1036 E. Seventh Ave.

Ron was born June 20, 1937, in Indianapolis, Ind. After he graduated, his family moved to Astor, Fla., to a big house on the St. Johns River. This was one of the happiest times of his life, fishing on the river and Spring Creek. Ron attended the Citadel in Charleston, S.C. He made the military his career, with seven years in the Marines and 16 years in the Air Force, reaching the rank of chief master sergeant. His field was disaster preparedness, and his stations included Travis, McChord, Langley, Elmendorf and Bentwaters (England) Air Force bases. He also served four tours in Vietnam, and was a prisoner of war in China. After retiring from the military, Ron went to work for RCA and GE as their disaster preparedness officer for Alaska's 12 radar sites. Ron loved hunting, fishing and animals, especially his hunting dogs. Another passion was antiques, and he and his wife have been antiques dealers in Anchorage for 30 years. "Ron faced so many challenges in his life, both in his career and healthwise but never seemed to falter," his family said. "His resilience was remarkable, and everyone who knew him said he was amazing. Under all this adversity, people always said he had the sweetest smile."

Ron is survived by his wife of 30 years, Merna; his first wife, Judith Meyring of Vacaville, Calif.; children and spouses, Kim and David Gordon of Rye, N.Y., and Chris and Tina Mobley of Vacaville; nieces, Stacey Bielman of Casselberry, Fla., Debbie Rutland of Hyannis Port, Mass., and Nannette Hargis of Vero Beach, Fla.; nephews, Tim Montgomery of Saratoga, Calif., and Mike Mobley of Indianapolis, Ind.; and eight grandchildren. Ron was preceded in death by his father and mother, Leroy and Autrey Mobley; his brother, Charles Mobley; sister, Micky Hicks; and son, Mark Mobley. Visit the online memorial at legacy.com
