Illinois Governor. He attended Dartmouth College, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1823 and established a successful legal firm in Illinois. He was a member of the Illinois Legislature, (1837-39) and served as receiver of public monies in the land office of Palestine, Illinois, in 1839. In 1846, he was elected as a Democrat the 9th Governor of Illinois, serving until 1853. While in office, he pushed for the funding to retire the state's debt and a new state constitution was adopted. After his term, he served as a bank commissioner and was a professor of law at McKendree College Illinois, until his death at age 56.
