Deceased Name: ROBERT P. PLANTZ, 67 ELBRIDGE TOWN OFFICIAL

Robert P. Plantz, highway superintendent for the town of Elbridge, died Tuesday at Auburn Memorial Hospital after becoming ill at his home. He was 67 and lived at 5935 Hamilton Road, Jordan.
Mr. Plantz was a longtime resident of Jordan, active in community affairs. Everyone called him "Rosie."
He had the name since childhood, his wife, Mabel, said today. "When he was a little boy, he was a little redhead. He blushes very, very easily. Although he lost the red hair, he always maintained that little bit of shyness. The name stuck."
Mr. Plantz was born in Syracuse and lived most of his life in Jordan. He was a 1944 graduate of Jordan High School.
Mr. Plantz went from high school to war, serving in the Navy during World War II. His wife recalled him telling her it was hard for him to be away from his family.
"He was very frightened. When they got word that the war was over, he was on a ship, the USS PC 780, in Hawaii. He was on the way but never saw action," she said.
Mr. Plantz was highway superintendent since 1985. "He was dedicated to the town of Elbridge and the people of Elbridge. He did a lot of things for people no one ever knew about. He will be missed very much," said Lawrence Gray, Elbridge town supervisor.
Before joining the highway department, Mr. Plantz owned Plantz Service Station in Jordan from 1952 to 1985.
He was a member of Jordan United Methodist Church and the New York State Association of Town Superintendents of Highway. He was a former member of Jordan Lodge 386, F&AM, and the Jordan Fire Department.
Mr. Plantz was a member of Jordan Post 1127, American Legion, and the former Jordan Post, VFW.
He was a Boy Scout leader for several years when his three sons were members. He was active in the Jordan Fall Festival.
"He loved Jordan and he loved doing things for kids. He was a basic man, very low-key," his wife said.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, the former Mabel Doyle; three sons, Thomas R. of Sodus Point, Stephen F. of Auburn and Gregory P. of Jordan; a daughter, Diane Tanner of Skaneateles; a brother, Bruce H. of Green Hill, Ala.; three sisters, Allura June Somes of Jordan, Doris Lynch of Weedsport and Carolyn Moore of Jordan; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in Jordan United Methodist Church. Burial is in Maple Grove Cemetery, Jordan.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today at B.L. Bush & Sons Funeral Home, 15 N. Main St., Jordan
