John David Holbert Sr., 61, of El Monte, Calif, former Nampa resident, died at El Monte Wednesday from an extended illness. He was born June 4, 1899, at Saluda, No Carolina and came to Nampa in 1930.
He was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad as a section hand for many years and retired in May 1959. The family had resided in California since then. Mr. Holbert was a member of the Boise Valley Church of the Brethren.
Surviving him are his wife Mrs. Hattie Sue Holbert, El Monte: Five sons, John Jr, of Nampa, Archie of Pico Riviera, calf, Richard, Leonard, and Eddie, all of El Montie: a daughter Mrs. Laona Strauchon of Nampa, a stepson, Earl Holbert of Boise, one stepdaughter, Mrs Ruth Bennett of Horseshoe Bend, Id, four sisters, Mrs. Hester Davis of Millsprings, No. Carolina, Mrs. Odessa Nielsen, Mrs. Ivory French, and Mrs. Louise Shannon , all of Nampa. one brother Bryant Holbert of Nampa and 17 grandchildren. A son and daughter preceded him in death.
Services will be conducted at 3 pm Tuesday at the Alsip Chapel, Rev. E. J. Glover of the Boise Valley Church of the Brethren will officiate and interment will be at Kohlerlawn cemetery.
Pallbearers are Fred Colson, R.O. Purdum, Vince C. Clayton, Harry Ward, Ralph Ward, and Kenneth Gillmore.
