United States Army General. After graduating from Lafayette College Pennsylvania, in 1924, he entered the US Army and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 26th Infantry. After serving in various stations, he attended advanced training at the Infantry School Fort Benning Georgia and was promoted Captain in 1935. At the start of World War II, he was a Colonel on the War Department General Staff, when he was assigned to the Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Supply. In 1942, he was sent to the Southwest Pacific, as chief of staff of the 6th Army, a position he held through the end of World War II. Promoted Major General in June 1945, he commanded the 6th Army in operations in New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and the Philippines. After the war, he served as Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the US European Command France, Commander-in-Chief, UN Command, Commanding General of US Forces, Korea and the 8th US Army. In 1959, as a Lieutenant General he was appointed Vice Chief of Staff of the Army and became Chief of Staff of the Army in 1960. He remained in position as Chief of Staff of the Army, until he retired from active service a four star General in October 1962. His awards included the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star Medal, Legion of Merit and Bronze Star Medal.
