Chauncey served in the Civil War, enlisting 24 May 1861 in Company K of the 15th Illinois Infantry. He was later transferred to serve on the gunboats of the Mississippi River Squadron in February 1862. He was onboard the gunboat USS Cairo 12 December 1862 when it was sunk by a mine on the Yazoo River in Mississippi. He was discharged 26 May 1864 with the rating of Carpenter's Mate..
