Stephanie Johnson Neal died on Feb. 17, 2011, after undergoing a medical procedure at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. She had fought a longterm battle with a debilitating heart condition since age 50 and had remained upbeat and active beyond all expectations. A celebration of life was held in the Anchorage Museum atrium.

Stephanie was born to Stephen and Marion Johnson in Wilkinsburg, Pa., on Nov. 11, 1931. She grew up in the Midwest, graduating from Oberlin, Ohio High School in 1949 and attending the College of William and Mary, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1953. In 1953, she married Lt. Donald Neal. During his 28-year military career with its 19 moves, she was always able to provide a loving and welcoming home for Don and their three daughters. Upon arrival at Fort Richardson, they knew immediately that they had found their true home, Alaska, and have lived here since 1968. Stephanie's life outside family was centered on volunteer work and helping others. She was a volunteer for the Girl Scouts Susitna Council, the Anchorage Museum and the Anchorage Concert Association for over 30 years. The Girl Scouts honored her with the Thanks Badge II, she was one of the first Volunteers of the Year at the Museum, and Stephanie was one of 20 Alaskans honored with a First Lady's Volunteer Award in 1993. She enjoyed music and theater of all kinds. In addition to her love of the arts, Stephanie was an avid reader and a crossword puzzle fanatic. She was very knowledgeable about Alaska history and attended classes through UAA's OLE' program. Her home was the center of family activities and celebrations and she took great joy in being with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Don; daughters, Deborah (Lee) Holmes and Cheryl (Mark) Lovegreen; stepmother, Helen Johnson; and siblings Stephen Johnson III and Cheryl Mees. She was preceded in death by her mother, Marion Johnson; her father, Stephen Johnson Jr.; and a daughter, Patricia. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Anchorage Concert Association. Arrangements are with Legacy Funeral Home-Bragaw Chapel. Visit the online memorial at legacy.com
