Born c.1699 in Edinburgh, Scotland, twice-married, Mary (nee Nutman) Williams Conduit died in her 77th year. A careful reading of her gravestone reveals that Amos Williams, Esq., was her first husband, and that she was the wife of "Mr. Samuel Conduit" at the time of her death. (Conduit, who survived her by exactly 5 months to the day, is buried nearby.) Both his gravestone and hers are among several in this churchyard made by the "Roman Haircut Carver", an unidentified craftsman active in the 1770's whose work features high-relief soul effigies with hair combed forward.
