Writer. Best selling author of popular works in Germany, selling over 83 million books to date. Original name Heinz Günther. He took his mother's maiden name as his pen name and also wrote under the names Benno von Marroth and Jens Bekker. He first studied medicine but then switched to a liberal arts program. He had already written articles for newspapers in Cologne at the age of 16. He briefly worked for the Gestapo in 1939, while working on plays in his spare time, and later became a war correspondent in France and on the Russian Front, where he was badly wounded. After the war he worked as an editor in Cologne until he became a full time writer in 1951. His break through work was "The Doctor from Stalingrad" in 1956, which was later made into a popular movie in 1958. His writings were mainly romance and medical novels, with war stories thrown in. He neither promoted not defended German militarism, but instead he stated that his works were designed to show the futility of war and the human side of the wartime experience, though some critics have claimed that he glorified war. His publisher has stated that over 3 million of his books are sold every year of his catalog of 155 novels. He also wrote a few dramas and movie scripts.
