Sarah Baldwin's gravestone appears to have been broken with only the upper portion reset in the ground, leaving the viewer at a loss as to her age and date of death, which probably occurred in the mid to late 1700's. It's fortunate that this portion has survived, as its tympanum features a remarkably serene, finely-wrought soul effigy which seems to give full assurance that the deceased is resting in peace. This beautiful gravestone, which is made of brown sandstone, is the only one of its style in the churchyard.
As many early graves lie beneath later additions to the church building, and the gravestones marking these were moved further out into the churchyard, Sarah's may not be in its original location, which could account for its appearing to have been broken off or sunk into the ground.
This contributor has as yet been unable to determine which of the Sarah Baldwins listed in the church burial roster was/is buried beneath it:
1. Sarah, wife of Aaron Baldwin (born c.1760; died 11/18/1799
or
2. Sarah Baldwin (no additional info)
Complicating the matter, church records also list three Sarah Baldwin baptisms:
1. Sarah, d. of Amos Baldwin, baptized 11/7/1756
2. Sarah, d. of Benjamin Baldwin, baptized 10/1/1758
3. Sarah, d. of Caleb & Rebecca Baldwin, baptized 2/27/1774
