A veteran of the Revolutionary War, John Wright is named on the D.A.R. Monument in the churchyard of the First Presbyterian Church of Orange, NJ, as one of those buried therein who fought for American independence. Dedicated in 1931, this memorial consists of a bronze plaque attached to a large rock, and is located just steps away from the front entrance to the church.
John Wright is mentioned in a history of the Oranges written by Henry Whittemore (published 1896) as having been badly wounded in a skirmish with British Highland troops in the area in 1776, after holding them at bay with his comrades John Tichenor and Joshua Shaw.

Although not yet confirmed by this contributor, John Wright was in all likelihood the husband of the "Mrs. Elizabeth Wright" who is also buried in this churchyard. The daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (nee Lindsley) Peck, her lifespan (c.1747-1819) corresponds to that of a man who would have been of fighting age during the Revolution. It is known that a John and Elizabeth Wright were the parents of five children buried in a single grave here. Four of these five were born during the war years, and all died in October 1784, a year after the conflict ended. It has yet to be discovered by this contributor whether their deaths were caused by an infectious disease, or an accident, such as a fire. But even in an era when half of all children born died before reaching adulthood, the "one fell swoop" nature of the Wrights' loss makes it even more tragic.
