Revolutionary War veteran Joseph Tompkins is listed on the D.A.R. Plaque just outside the First Presbyterian Church of Orange which honors those buried in its churchyard who fought for American independence. The son of John Tompkins, he was in his late 30's and early 40's during the Revolutionary War years, and his maturity and experience evidently proved valuable in frustrating the enemy. According to Volume I of a published history of the Tompkyns clan in America, which gives his birth year as "1739", and the year and place of his death as "1818, in Orange, Essex County, New Jersey", Mr. Tompkins was called "Fox Joe" by the British, as he gave them "so much trouble and always escaped capture". After the war's end, the brave, wily veteran lived on for another 35 years, and was approximately 79 at the time of his death.
