Born c.1740, James Smith was a veteran of the Revolutionary War who died shortly after its conclusion, at age 44. Although his was not a long life, he lived to see the triumph of the cause he fought for.
His grave is marked by a plain brown sandstone stele, devoid of the soul effigies which still remained popular at this time. His name also appears on the D.A.R. monument just outside the front entrance to the church. Dedicated in 1931, this memorial honors Revolutionary War veterans interred in this churchyard.
