American patriot John Perry fought in the Revolutionary War. According to local histories, he was an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Orange during the Federal Period, and was 55 years old in 1806. Born c.1750-51, he would have been in his mid-20's to early 30's during the war. An eroded marble stele inscribed "TO JOHN PERRY" stands near the front doors of the church, but age, date of death, and the rest of the inscription are illegible. Its style is early Victorian, however, suggesting several possibilities:

1)John Perry was long-lived, surviving into his 90's;
2)The stone is a 19th Century replacement for an earlier one which had been damaged/destroyed
3)It marks the grave of another individual named John Perry

Gravesite Details Named on D.A.R. plaque in front of church as a Revolutionary War veteran buried in this churchyard
