Eleazer Ogden served as a Minuteman in the Essex County Militia during the American Revolution. The son of Captain Abraham Ogden, who also fought for American independence, Eleazer was in his mid-20's when the war began, and in his early 30's when it ended. A native of Orange, NJ, he died there at the age of 75. His survivors included his wife, the former Jemima Harrison, who by some records, was 25 years his junior. This calculation is based on an apparent transcription error, however. Other sources give her birth year as 1757--an age difference of five years--and year of death as 1839, a more probable lifespan.
His name is listed on the D.A.R. Monument just outside the front entrance of the First Presbyterian Church of Orange, NJ. This memorial, which consists of a bronze plaque affixed to a boulder, was erected in 1931 to honor the Revolutionary War veterans buried in this churchyard.
