Revolutionary War veteran. David Munn, the son of Benjamin and Jemima (nee Pierson) Munn, joined the Essex County Militia and fought for American independence as a youth in his teens and early 20's. Born in the Munn homestead at what is now the corner of Main Street and South Arlington Avenue in East Orange, NJ, he eventually came to own more than 150 acres on both sides of present day Munn Avenue, formerly Munn Lane. The long-lived veteran died in the spring of 1843 at the age of 82. A widower at the time of his death, he had been predeceased by his wife, the former Abigail Baldwin, a decade earlier. Eight children had been born to the couple between the years 1781 and 1802: Lydia / Mrs. Moses Condit (b.1781); Lewis (b.1784); Benjamin (b.1786); Elizabeth (b.1788); Ann (b.1791, died before 1797); John T. (b.1794); a 2nd daughter named Ann (b.1797); and Sarah L. (b.1802).
David Munn is listed on the D.A.R. Monument just outside the front door of the First Ppresbyterian Church of Orange, NJ. This memorial, which consists of a bronze plaque affixed to a boulder, was erected in 1931 to honor the Revolutionary War veterans buried in the churchyard.
