Husband of Elizabeth Alexander Smith
Franklin came to Campbell Co., TN with his parents around 1800, and settled near the Claiborne and Campbell County Line. He was called to War and served as a Private in the Confederate Co. G, 61st Tenn Mtd Inf (Pitta' Reg, 81 TN Inf.), where he was taken prisoner and put in Camp Chase, Ohio. When he was released, he walked from Columbus, OH to Campbell Co., TN, with no shoes. When he returned home, he found that the war had taken all of his livestock, destroyed his crops and ransacked his house. His family had nothing but their land to start over. Franklin sold the farm in Campbell County, TN, called "The Little House" and went to Jefferson Co., TN in 1869. In 1875, he moved to Dodd City, Fannin Co., TX. He bought the Major Benjamin Cobb Home, 3/4 of a mile southeast of Dodd City. He later moved into Dodd City proper. At one time, he was a steward of the Dodd City Methodist Church, along with five of his sons.
