Henry Andrew Matthias, immigrated from Hessen, Germany, arriving in the United States on an unknown date in the mid-1850's. He settled in Southampton Mills (Glencoe), Somerset County, Pennsylvania where first appears in tax records in 1857. He married Elizabeth Anna Cook on January 23, 1859. They would later have nine children.

He enlisted in Company G 54th Pennsylvania Volunteers, on October 20, 1861, in Berlin, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He was honorably discharged on January 18, 1865, at the Deep Bottom Battlefield, Henrico County, Virginia.

After the war he suffered for many years with an illness from the June 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign. His death was caused by his service in the war. He is one of many Civil War Veterans that died long after the guns of war had become silent.

Brother of John Peter Matthias

NOTE: His name was originally spelled MATTHIAS but since he could not read or write everyone spelled his name with the single "T" spelling. All his children spell their last name with the MATHIAS (single "T") spelling.
