Actor, Director. Born the eldest child of pioneer filmmaker Wallace McCutcheon, Sr in New York City. As a young man, he appeared occasionally on stage as an actor, but in 1908 he substituted for his father at Biograph studios as a director. After six weeks on the lot, he was seen as a poor substitute, who presented bad scenarios and handled actors ineptly. He was thought more interested in finding roles for starlets than doing his job well, and he was fired after having directed less than a dozen titles including 'Over the Hill to the Poorhouse' (1908). In June 1919, he married well known actress Pearl White. He landed roles in several motion pictures such as 'The Floor Below' (1918), 'The Black Secret' (1919), and 'The Phantom Foe' (1920). His last part was in the comedy short, 'The Thief' (1920). In 1921, his wife divorced him for desertion, after which he apparently lost all direction, and was drinking heavily. He was eventually found dead by suicide.
